Fold. Stuff. Stick.

It's only right to follow up the invitation mailing post with the invitation making post! The last Sunday in July I was able to round up a few of my girlfriends and my mom to help finish the wedding invitations. Let's just say, I owe them BIG TIME for all their help! So girls, any painting, cleaning, landscaping, or other home improvement projects....or if you need some of your own invitations made...give me a call! smile

We started off the day easy. Lindsey and I made the pockets for the pocketfolds, while Bethany adhered the stamps to the RSVP cards. Then, we all took turns punching out leaves with this puncher:

It looks small and innocent, but don't let it fool you. Those leaves were a b*tch to punch out! I think it's because we were using heavyweight cardstock instead of normal text weight paper. After about 20 punches your thumb would hurt like mad and you'd have a permanent indention from the puncher's thumb pad. Whose brilliant idea was this, anyway? redface The kicker was these leaves weren't even for the wedding invitations. They were for the dinner menus that I'm making. Just trying to stay on top of things!

So after our thumbs were throughly blistered, Lindsey and I began adhering the invites to the pocketfolds. Then my mom joined the party, so I handed that job over to her and Lindsey and I began creating the belly bands for the outside of the invites, to which we were attaching our monogram. Don't we look like we're enjoying ourselves?

Lindsey is so like..."Take the picture already!" smile

Meanwhile, back in the dining room Julie is writing and writing and writing. Yep, I recruited her for her penmanship. I had aspirations of learning calligraphy and writing out my own envelopes, but I never got time to even crack open my Complete Idiot's Guide to Calligraphy. So, that went back to Borders and Julie was my replacement. I mean, look how hard she's working!

That long list of addresses looks intimidating, doesn't it? But with this as the final product, now do you see why I chose her?

I told Julie she should consider learning calligraphy and write invitation envelopes on the side. I really think she could rake in some extra dough!

So we finally had our assembly line going. Lindsey and I making the belly bands, Bethany and my mom putting the belly bands around the invites, Bethany taking the envelopes from Julie and adhering the stamps, and Bethany stuffing the invites in the envelopes while my mom sealed them.

We worked really hard and I think poor Julie never wanted to see another ivory envelope again. What I put my poor friends through! But all ended well. The only slight snafu was that my aunt didn't print enough directions cards for the envelopes, so we had around 25 invitations that we couldn't finish, but I solved that quite easily by completing the rest of them the very next weekend. Ahh....success! This was a big accomplishment. And it is really cool seeing my idea come to life. I hope everyone likes them!

Stamps, Anyone?

The time for invitation mailing is certainly starting to draw near. And what does that mean? Deciding on stamps, of course! I had no idea how much it was going to cost to mail one of our invitations, so I whipped up a sample on Sunday night. Just by the weight of the envelope, my guess was $1 per invitation. Since I can't stand suspense, I hightailed it to the post office last night to find out!

First, the lady helping me said they would cost $1.34 each. eek Eeek! A little more than I was planning on, but I did get the invitations I wanted and I did save a bit of money by brainstorming with my aunt and making them myself. But, really?! That would be...

a New Hampshire

plus a dragonfly.

Can we say weird combination? "Well," she said, "let's see how else we could work this." She did some magic and all of a sudden decided she could charge me $1.00 each! Something about large flat rate... I don't know, but anything less than $1.34 was sounding good at that point. Then she went on to tell me that the two different wedding stamps they have combine to be $1.01. Perfect! So the invitations will be sporting these babies...
Can't say that I'm a huge heart fan, but I think they're very wedding appropriate. And don't let the orangish color fool you. They're really more of a tan in person. So with that, I said give me 140 of each! And oh yes, some postcard stamps too while you're at it. And to cut down on the decisions (someone was looking out for me!), they only make one design for postcard stamps...so fruit it is!

We're having another (final) invitation making party on Sunday, July 27 so that should be the day we use these beauties. Oh, and while I was at the post office, I went as far as mailing myself an invitation so I can find out how it handles traveling through the mail. Yeah, I'm a dork. razz

They Came. We Glued.

and cut...

and glued...

and cut...

Invitation activities commenced at 10 am on Saturday morning. There was food, chatter, laughter, a little classic rock in the background, and most of all...HARD WORK. We began with the bridal shower invitations. We had a nice assembly line going and were halfway through when Lindsey exclaimed, "Oh no...my phone number is wrong." (Her phone number is on the invitations for RSVP's).

Kelley: What?!

Lindsey: It's 9398, not 9397.

Kelley: You're kidding?! That's why I sent these to you to proofread!

Lindsey: Wait...that's my sisters number. We can make it work. I'll just talk to her.

Kelley: Okay...

Fast forward a bit... We've completed the bridal shower invitations and are writing out envelopes.

Lindsey: Oh no...

Kelley: What's wrong?

Lindsey: My number is REALLY wrong. I thought it was just the last four digits, but it's the first three too.

Kelley: You. are. kidding.

Lindsey: No, it's 619, not 680.

Kelley: S**t. If we would have realized this before we started gluing, we just could have printed on the other side!

Well, our first roadblock turned out to be our only roadblock. We made a snazzy different colored square with the re-printed information to cover up the mistake. Becky used her superb measuring skills and they were as good as new. And really, it just looks like an additional design element. No one will ever know...except those of you that read this!

With those invitations and some lunch under our belts, the bachelorette party invitations were created quickly. Our final task of the day was to get a start on some of the elements of the wedding invitations. We glued the invitation to colored backing and a monogram to colored backing. Lindsey and I had to make an extra run to Michael's in the middle of gluing, as we ran out of glue dots and tape rollers. Apparently you can never have enough. neutral

And then the big, monotonous job for the day....envelopes. I wanted to line the envelopes with a colored paper to make them look classy. While some think I'm crazy, everyone was a good sport about it. This was by far the most tedious because we had to trace, cut out an odd shape by hand, and then glue...all this about 140 times. Luckily towards the end Nate arrived home from golfing and started making us martinis. Thank the Lord!

(Notice the festive martinis)

Invitation activities concluded at 5:30 pm. Needless to say, I was ready to stop...as I'm sure everyone else was. We'll probably have to have one more marathon invitation day and we'll be completed.

Who has the bestest friends in the world? I do! Thanks girls!! wink

Plans for the Weekend

I'm making a trip to my home town this weekend to get through some more wedding items. Here is what the agenda is looking like:

  • Meeting about invitations (design, wording, etc.)
  • Meeting with musicians (hearing them play/sing, picking out music)
  • Meeting with the priest (discussing readings, music, those participating in mass, etc.)
  • Browsing for jewelry for bridesmaids
  • Picking up ring bearer's pillow from the cleaners (hopefully it's ready)
Other non-wedding items:
  • Attending my cousin Nathan's graduation party
  • Meeting up with some friends to have dinner, catch up, and share wedding planning stories!
I'll be sure to provide an update on how it all turned out next week!

We also are getting our engagement pictures taken on Sunday evening. Our last attempt to do this was three weeks ago when we had some cold, rainy weather. The forecast is looking much better this time around...
Sunny and 75 degrees! Should be a beautiful day.

Invitation Wording

I've been exchanging several emails with my aunt the past week and I have talked to both sets of parents and Nate to get their thoughts on the wording for the invitations. I wanted something a bit different from the traditional wording, but not too far fetched. And, of course, I could change my mind tomorrow, but this is what I think I've settled on:

BECAUSE YOU HAVE SHARED IN THEIR LIVES
BY YOUR FRIENDSHIP AND LOVE
RON AND BRENDA KLIETHERMES
REQUEST THE HONOUR OF YOUR PRESENCE
AT THE MARRIAGE OF THEIR DAUGHTER
KELLEY ANN
TO
NATHAN SCOTT
SON OF DAVE AND BERNI SEIBEL
ON SATURDAY, THE FOURTH OF OCTOBER
TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHT
AT TWO O'CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH
LOOSE CREEK, MISSOURI

Where are my proof readers out there? What do you think? We decided to go with less formal names for the parents, so instead of Mr. and Mrs., we just used the parents' first names. I also added the first two lines to make it a bit different from the traditional wording. Hmm, now that I've read over this again, I wonder if I have to have the exact address of the church since we're having quite a few out of town guests? Everyone normally knows where the church in Loose Creek is! biggrin But if there was a map and directions included in the invitation, would that be overkill?

To go along with my post about choices on Wednesday night, have you ever thought about how many different fonts are out there?? Gazillions! eek I'm looking for something simple and easy to read for the majority of the wording, with our names being in more of a scripty font. Should be easy to find, right? wink And then, of course, there's the actual design, paper colors, inserts, etc. But I think I've got a good grasp on which direction I want to head with that. I'm actually really enjoying this paper-crafty stuff!
